The blood sugar level is the amount of glucose (sugar) present in the blood of a human or animal. The body naturally regulates blood glucose levels as a part of metabolic homeostasis.
Glucose arises from most foods, and the body uses other chemicals to create glucose in the liver and muscles. The blood brings glucose (blood sugar) to all the cells in the body. To carry glucose into the cells as an energy supply, cells need help from insulin (hormone made by the pancreas).
Not only people diagnosed should be worried about blood sugar level, healthy people, who for extended period have high blood sugar level have to be worried because it can lead to diabetes. It is well known about diabetes and over a prolonged period metabolism disorder, which leads to high sugar levels in blood.
Here are some factors that can contribute to the high sugar level in blood:
- Carbohydrates: The body of a person with diabetes cannot process high levels of carbohydrates (form of sugar) fast enough to convert it into energy, and their Blood sugar levels can rise within hours after eating.
- Insulin control: Not producing enough insulin action (either by injection of insulin or taking medicine which stimulates the pancreas to make more insulin). People with diabetes must control blood sugar. Food, exercise, and insulin should be balance, so blood sugar levels decrease.
- Irregular physical activity: Daily exercise is a serious contributor to regulate blood sugar levels.
- Major stress: Emotions can play a role in causing hyperglycemia, but should not be used as an excuse for poor control of diabetes.
- Some certain health conditions: With illness, blood sugar levels tend to rise quickly over several hours.
- Using certain medications: Certain drugs, especially steroids, can affect blood sugar levels.
What are the high blood sugar symptoms?
When blood sugar levels remain high for several hours, dehydration and more serious complications can develop. If you have high blood sugar level it doesn’t mean that you have diabetes, it is only a sign that you have to take care of it. There are some people that don’t have high blood sugar level symptoms but they have diagnosed diabetes.

The glucose (sugar) level in one’s blood rises high temporarily, this condition is known as hyperglycemia. The opposite condition, low blood sugar, is called hypoglycemia.
GI-glycemic index is a number ranking of carbohydrate in particular type of food and indicates how they affect a person’s blood glucose levels. Its scale is from 0 to 100. The higher the GI in a particular food, it means that rapidly increases in blood sugar. Scale of 100 means pure glucose. Food with low GI value (less than 55) is more slowly digested and metabolized than food with high GI value and it slower rise in blood sugar, therefore and insulin levels. One of many benefits of low GI food is very good in weight control.
